Prime Minister Viktor Orbán meets with the Grand Master
Rome, October 27. Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and Deputy Prime Minister Zsolt Semjén were received by Grand Master Fra' John Timothy Dunlap at the Order's headquarters in Rome. They discussed the prospects for peace in Ukraine and the maintenance of the ceasefire in Gaza.
According to a statement issued at the end of the meeting, the parties highlighted the Order's work in Hungary, where it has provided assistance, medical care, and integration programs to more than 52,000 Ukrainian refugees since the outbreak of war in 2022.
The Order of Malta values its relationship with Hungary, which has been maintained since 1990.
The Grand Master and Viktor Orbán called for further expansion of cooperation in third countries as well, within the framework of the Hungary Helps government program. They recalled the memorandum of understanding signed in 2024, which strengthened cooperation between the Order and the Hungarian government in the protection of persecuted Christians and other religious and ethnic minorities.
The palace complex on the Aventine Hill, the Roman headquarters of the Order of Malta, is unique in that the keyhole of the entrance gate offers a direct view of the dome of St. Peter's Basilica. Viktor Orbán was also shown this extraordinary sight.
