Opening of exhibition about the Order of Malta

Budapest, 26th September. Two days after the inauguration of the new Convent-house, a poster exhibition was opened in the "Malta Chapel" of the Coronation Church (Matthias Church) in Buda Castle, in presence of the Canon of the Church and local officials. The exhibition was organised to mark the occasion of the restoration of the Convent-house, and designed to draw tourists' and visitors' attention to the Order of Malta. After the opening, Members of the Order attended Evening Mass in the main church.

The "Malta Chapel" was established in the left-side upper gallery of Matthias Church in 1927, and served as the chapel of the Order until 1945. It is remarkable to this day through the presence of the heraldic shields of members of the Hungarian Association of the Order since its inception in 1928. The tradition was renewed after the great restoration of the church ending in 2005: every year on All Souls' Day, the heraldic shields of members who passed away during the year are ceremonially placed on the walls of the chapel - by now they extend to the corridor of the lower church.

The exhibition consists of two large panels, which illustrate the history and activities of the Order worldwide and in Hungary, with pictures and Hungarian-English texts, thus providing visitors and tourists with a background to viewing the chapel and the heraldic shields.

The opening speech of the President of the Association, Kristóf Szabadhegÿ, can be read (in Hungarian only) by clicking here.

The homily by Mons. László Süllei, Vicar of Matthias Church, can be read (in Hungarian only) by clicking here.
