Memorial Mass for Bishop Vilmos Apor
Saturday, May 23: A solemn memorial Mass was celebrated in honour of the martyr bishop on his feastday in the Cathedral of Our Lady in Győr, the city of which he had been the bishop. The Holy Mass was celebrated by András Veres, Bishop of Győr, together with a number of fellow priests, and attended by representatives of the Papal Nunciatura. Due to the coronavirus situation, only a reduced number of faithful were able to attend. The Order was represented by six members, led by the President of the Hungarian Association, Kristóf Szabadhegÿ, and HE Imre Ugron, Ambassador of the Order.
Bishop Veres pointed out in his homily that the example of Bishop Apor shows us how to remain human and remain Christians even in times of the raging of evil forces. He recalled the words of Pope Saint John Paul durign his visit to Győr in 1996: "You have splendid examples to follow, be inspired by them!"
At the end of Mass the concelebrants, deacons and mambers of the Order processed to the tomb of Bishop Apor for a prayer and a blessing. The members of the Order recited the Prayer of the Knight of Malta.
